Two clear routes.

Which packet are you growing?

Wheat, oat and barley work in soil or the FelineBoost kit. Catnip follows its own soil-only route.

Wheat route

Soak first, then choose kit or soil.

Soak wheat seeds in cool water for 8–12 hours, drain and rinse thoroughly, then continue with either verified grass method below.

Choose the route that fits your seed

Two methods. One clear next step.

Method 01

Growing in soil.

A familiar approach for wheat, oat and barley—and the only method for catnip.

Wheat · oat · barley

Soak first, then sow.

  1. 01

Soak. Cover seeds with cool water for 8–12 hours.

  2. 02

Prepare. Add 1½–2 inches of moist potting mix to a drainage container.

  3. 03

Sow. Spread evenly, press gently and cover with a very thin layer of soil.

  4. 04

Germinate. Keep loosely covered or dim until the seeds sprout.

  5. 05

Grow. Move to bright indirect light; keep lightly moist, never waterlogged.

  6. 06

Offer. Fresh grass is ready around 3–5 inches tall.

Catnip

No soaking. Its own pot.

  1. 01

Fill a small drainage pot with well-draining soil and moisten lightly.

  2. 02

Sprinkle the seeds, press them in and cover very lightly.

  3. 03

Keep warm and bright with lightly moist—not wet—soil.

  4. 04

Thin crowded seedlings and let the plant establish before offering leaves.

Do not soak catnip or grow it in the self-watering cat grass tray.
Method 02

Using the FelineBoost kit.

The soil-free route for wheat, oat and barley. Do not use this route for catnip.

Hand placing the supplied hemp mat into the FelineBoost kit's single inner tray
Before you beginSet the supplied mat into the single inner tray.
  1. 01

    Soak

Soak grass seeds in cool water for 8–12 hours.

  2. 02

    Drain & rinse

Drain the soaking water and rinse thoroughly.

  3. 03

    Prepare the tray

Place the hemp mat over the white insert inside the bamboo or white tray.

  4. 04

    Add water

Slowly pour 2½ cups over the mat until evenly moist; excess collects underneath.

  5. 05

    Spread seeds

Distribute evenly and avoid thick piles or clumps.

  6. 06

    Blackout

Fit the blackout cover for the first few days.

  7. 07

    Uncover & grow

Remove the cover when shoots lift it or reach 1–2 inches, then move to normal indirect daylight.

Yellow shoots are normal.

New shoots may look yellow under the cover. They should turn green within a few hours in normal daylight. Avoid strong direct sun.

The fresh finish

Offer a young, tender crop.

Let your cat investigate at their own pace. Fresh grass naturally begins to fade after a couple of weeks; clean the equipment and begin a new batch.

A healthy crop starts with small adjustments

What to check when growth looks different.

01

Seeds are not sprouting

Check that seeds have not dried out, the room is warm enough, grass seeds were soaked, and seeds are not submerged.

02

Grass is yellow

Move the crop into brighter indirect light and make sure roots are not sitting in excess water.

03

Grass is falling over

The crop may need more light, more water, or a trim. Check the mat and room conditions.

04

White fuzz

Fine white root hairs can be normal. Mold is gray, green, blue or black and may smell sour.

05

Seeds smell sour

Discard the batch. Clean the tray, insert and reusable equipment before restarting.

06

The crop is fading

Cat grass naturally fades after a couple of weeks. Start a fresh batch for tender new growth.

The safety checkpoint

When in doubt, start fresh.

Discard any crop with colored growth, an unpleasant smell or another sign that concerns you. Clean the equipment thoroughly before the next batch.

Remember

Fine white root hairs can be normal.

Gray, green, blue or black growth may be mold.

A sour smell means the batch should be discarded.

For individual health concerns, ask your veterinarian.
